τὸ πρόβατον τὸ ἀπολωλός

ἄνθρωπός τις ἔχει ἐκατὸν πρόβατα. ἀπολέσας ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν καταλείπει τὰ πρόβατα ἐν τῇ ἑρήμῳ καὶ πορεύεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπολωλὸς ἕως εὕρῃ αὐτό. εὑρὼν τὸ πρόβατον ἐπιτίθησιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὤμους ἑαυτοῦ χαίρων.

τίς ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ὑμῶν ἔχων ἑκατὸν πρόβατα, καὶ ἀπολέσας ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν, οὐ καταλείπει τὰ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ πορεύεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπολωλός, ἕως εὕρῃ αὐτό; καὶ εὑρὼν ἐπιτίθησιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὤμους ἑαυτοῦ χαίρων.

ῥήματα (Verbs)

Notice the accenting pattern for ζητεῖν. This is because it is a contract verb. For more information about contract verbs, see Present Indicative Verbs Chart. Can you tell which pattern of verbs εὑρίσκειν follows?

ζητεῖν	ζητῶ ζητεῖς ζητεῖ ζητοῦμεν ζητεῖτε ζητοῦσιν	ζητεῖ ὁ ποιμὴν τὸ πρόβατον τὸ ἀπολωλός.	The shepherd seeks the lost sheep.
εὑρίσκειν	εὑρίσκω εὑρίσκεις εὑρίσκει εὑρίσκομεν εὑρίσκετε εὑρίσκουσιν	ὁ ζητῶν εὑρίσκει.	He who seeks finds.

Below are two words from today’s lesson that are past tense verbs. These are simply here for your reference and so you can know the singular forms of each. However, we will learn more about how Greek does past tense in a later lesson.

ἀπολέσαι	ἀπώλεσα ἀπώλεσας ἀπώλεσεν	ἀπώλεσεν πρόβατον ἕν.	He lost one sheep.
εὑρεῖν	εὗρον εὗρες εὗρεν	εὗρεν τὸ ἀπολωλὸς πρόβατον.	He found the lost sheep.

τὰ λοιπά (The Rest)

The word ἕως is a preposition. When use with a nominal, the nominal will be genitive case. But ἕως can also be used with a verb like in today’s text. This verb form is a mood you have not encountered before. For now, just know that ἕως εὕρῃ is how you say until he finds.

ἕως	+ γενική (genitive)	οἱ προφῆται καὶ ὁ νόμος ἕως Ἰωάννου προεφήτευσαν	The prophets and the law prophesied until John. (c.f. Mathew 11:13)
ἕως	+ ὑποτακτική (subjunctive)	ζητεῖ ἕως εὕρῃ τὸ πρόβατον.	He seeks until he finds the sheep.
